Why Do Students Like Online Learning?

Why do students thrive in an online learning environment? With the all the opportunities in the world today, learning takes all forms. It’s everywhere from the internet to ipods, from television to video games, from texting to mobile advertising. Students are accessing one hundred times more knowledge outside the classroom than inside. Students today are
brighter, more confident and they are deep thinkers.
The job of educators today is to cultivate that intelligence and challenge students to become thinking, responsible and contributing citizens and continue learning for the rest of their lives.
Online learning is an option that can suit the student that is self-motivated, interested in education and creative. The following highlights nine reasons why students like online learning.

  1. Students can “attend” a course at anytime, from anywhere. This means students can take a class during their free hour in school, or at night or the weekend, part or full time. Students that are involved in extracurricular activities or a job or family obligations can learn around their busy schedules.
  2. Online learning enables student-centered teaching approaches. Every student has his or her own way of learning that works best. Some learn visually; others do better when they “learn by doing.” With a personalized learning approach, learning is a one-to -one ratio with instructors focusing on one student at a time. Every student has a “front row” seat.
  3. Course material is accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Students have the ability to read and re read lessons, discussions, explanations and comments. Spoken material in the classroom sometimes passes by students due to a number of distractions, missed classes, fatigue or boredom. With an online, personalized learning approach, each student can take the time to comprehend each section of a course.
  4. Using the internet to attend class, research information and communication with other students teaches skills in using technologies that will be critical to workers in the 21st century business community that works with colleagues globally.
  5. Participating online is much less intimidating than “in the classroom.” Anonymity provides students a level playing field undisturbed by bias caused by seating arrangement, gender, race and age. Students can also think longer about what they want to say and add their comments when ready.
  6. Making friends is easy online because online institutions offer “chat rooms” for informal conversation between students, where student bios and non class discussions can take place.
  7. The online environment makes instructors more approachable. Students can talk openly with their teachers through online chats, email and in newsgroup discussions. This option for communication provides enhanced contact between instructors and students.
  8. Because there are no geographic barriers to online learning, students can find a diversity of course material at all levels that may not be available to them where they live. This is evident throughout New Hampshire where various courses are not offered in their school due to lack of interest or budget.
