Arts In The Schools
Elementary School
General Instruction -- Elementary school students receive weekly classes in art and music from a teacher who is a specialist in the subject. These classes present an overview of the subjects introducing students to various aspects of fine art and musical forms.
Instrumental Instruction -- Students in grades 3-5 are eligible to receive a free weekly ½ hour group lesson in violin or cello. Beginning in grade 5 students may receive a free weekly ½ hour group lesson in a band instrument; trumpet, trombone, saxophone, flute, clarinet, or percussion. Lessons take place in the school during the school day. Families provide instruments. Sign up materials are sent home with students early in the school year.
Middle School
Unified Arts -- Students in middle school take a quarterly class in art or music appreciation on a rotating basis with other subjects including physical education, family and consumer science, technology, and materials processing (wood shop). This is part of the regular instruction for all students. Additional opportunities are available through clubs and the 21st Century Afterschool Program.
Band, Chorus, and Orchestra -- Students may choose to sign up for one of the three musical groups offered in middle school. Students have class daily during school hours. Generally, students who sign up for orchestra or band have been receiving instrument classes in elementary school. Incoming 6th graders will sign up in the spring of their 5th grade year.
High School
Fine Arts -- Students with an interest in Fine Arts can sign up for a variety of courses during their high school career. To learn what is available, consult the course of study for your child’s high school on-line at http://www.mansd.org
